SolTerra is breaking ground on its first-ever apartment project, the 98-unit, six-story Atlas, in its home state.
Located next to the Newcastle Library at 12901 Newcastle Way, it is the first large apartment project to go up in the suburb in 15 years, and the first super-green mixed-use apartment project of its kind on the Eastside.
SolTerra, which has offices in Seattle and Portland, has completed just one apartment project with 18 units in Portland, but is building or planning to build 10 more – some in Portland, some in Seattle. The company’s goal is to develop 1,500 apartment units by the end of 2017.
Atlas will have triple-pane windows, high-efficiency heating and cooling units, a green roof to provide insulation and a “living wall” of plants to help cool the building and is estimated to consume 30 percent less energy than a typical new building without the green bells and whistles.
